Been a while again

I am getting some hits here from my youtube links so I thought I would write some new stuff.  I find it way easier to just do a video but I guess I will type for those that care.  I have nobody reading me so what is the point haha.

So today is the warmest day of the year so far.  It was almost 50, and we did not even need a coat to go outside.  We spent a lot of time outside with the kids and the chickens.  It felt very nice to be in the sun again.  Coming out of a long winter can feel a lot like waking up.  After Christmas there is not much to do.  You just sit and wait for the snow to melt.  Since we are not really into skying or anything winter can be quite boring.

What we have done to pass the time is to just spend more family time together.  We try to go to the funpark, which is an inside park with games etc.  We also have movie night on saturday nights.

My preparations have continued, call me nuts but I do not trust the talking heads when they say things are getting better.  I see things at the store getting smaller, gas is going up and we have nuts like bloomberg saying that the economy is fine the government can print money forever.  Guess these guys do not follow history much.  I am not worried though,  all of our hard work over the past few years brings us a calm.  I would hate to start prepping at this point with prices so high.  Things will be interesting that is for sure.

Well if anyone reads this I hope you like my little update.  I will  post every week for those that care.

Thanks

Its been while

Well I have decided that I should write here more often so here it goes.  Lately things have been busy at home and at work.  The chickens are coming along well, and laying about 3 eggs per day.  The garden is also producing, lots of zucchini, tomato, berries of all kinds, and fruit from the trees.  I am glad that we planted fruit trees a few years back in anticipation of the depression I believe we about to enter.

Work has been busy, I had a couple rescues this week alone.  We had a woman fall off a horse, hit her head, and become altered, then while we were doing c-spine she vomited all over the place.  That was really nasty, but it is part of the job I guess.  She got airlifted to a bigger hospital.

All in all it has been a good week, good family, and of course all by the Grace of our Lord.

See ya till next week!

Dutch Oven Cooking

Well it snowed last night, but was gone by the time I was ready to make dinner.  Today I thought I would make some roast pork with potato in the 10" dutch.  I used wood instead of charcoal to assure thatI knew how to do it.  It enede up taking a lot more wood then I thought.  I first built a little log cabin type lay, then as it was building I slowly put hardwood on top.  These were about 2" in diameter.  I started by preheating the oven, then sauted the onion in butter.  When that was done in went the mushrooms and tomato.  Next I added the sliced pork roast and cream of mushroom soup.  It all came together and took about 2 hours total.  I found that cooking this way takes more wood then you think, in the future I will use charcoal, but from time to time I will also use wood to keep my skills up.

It turned out very good.  It is important not just to stock up on supplies, but to also get out and use/ practice with this equipment.

Spring is here.

Spring may be here, but it is still cold.  Snow will still fall but it does not last once the sun comes up.  Today we got the chance to work outside, it was nice to get my hands in the dirt.  I cleaned out the strawberry patch and found a lost raspberry plant that has been neglected.  I also took the gooseberry starts outside to harden off.

The chickens are now two weeks old and growing quickly.  I change their water everyday, and change their bedding every 3 days.  They sure do make a mess!  The kids love them!
