Dutch Oven Cooking

Well it snowed last night, but was gone by the time I was ready to make dinner.  Today I thought I would make some roast pork with potato in the 10" dutch.  I used wood instead of charcoal to assure thatI knew how to do it.  It enede up taking a lot more wood then I thought.  I first built a little log cabin type lay, then as it was building I slowly put hardwood on top.  These were about 2" in diameter.  I started by preheating the oven, then sauted the onion in butter.  When that was done in went the mushrooms and tomato.  Next I added the sliced pork roast and cream of mushroom soup.  It all came together and took about 2 hours total.  I found that cooking this way takes more wood then you think, in the future I will use charcoal, but from time to time I will also use wood to keep my skills up.

It turned out very good.  It is important not just to stock up on supplies, but to also get out and use/ practice with this equipment.

Spring is here.

Spring may be here, but it is still cold.  Snow will still fall but it does not last once the sun comes up.  Today we got the chance to work outside, it was nice to get my hands in the dirt.  I cleaned out the strawberry patch and found a lost raspberry plant that has been neglected.  I also took the gooseberry starts outside to harden off.

The chickens are now two weeks old and growing quickly.  I change their water everyday, and change their bedding every 3 days.  They sure do make a mess!  The kids love them!
